John Tenta: Canadian Sumōtori and Professional Wrestler
A Life Dedicated to the Ring
From Sumō to the Squared Circle
June 22, 1963 - June 7, 2006
John Tenta, a Canadian sumōtori and professional wrestler, left an enduring legacy in both arenas. Born in Surrey, British Columbia, Tenta's journey to the ring began in the ancient Japanese tradition of sumō wrestling. He achieved the prestigious rank of sekitori, becoming one of the few non-Japanese to attain this honor.
After transitioning to professional wrestling, Tenta became known as "Earthquake" in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). With his massive frame and signature belly-to-belly suplex, he wreaked havoc on opponents in the ring. He famously feuded with Hulk Hogan and formed a memorable tag team with Typhoon, known as "The Natural Disasters."
Tenta also had a brief stint in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) before returning to the WWF. His impressive career culminated in a victory over Bam Bam Bigelow at WrestleMania XI. Throughout his time in the wrestling business, Tenta gained respect from fans and fellow wrestlers alike for his athleticism and dedication.
