Alex Ferguson opens up about dementia battle and urges others to get tested

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up about his battle with dementia, urging others to get tested if they have any concerns.

In an interview with The Guardian, Ferguson revealed that he was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in 2014, which has since progressed to early-stage dementia.

The 79-year-old said that he had been experiencing memory problems for several years before his diagnosis, but had put them down to the stresses of his job as United manager.

“I used to think that maybe it was just a bit of stress,” he said. “But then I started to forget things that I shouldn't have forgotten. I knew it was more than just stress.”

Ferguson said that he decided to go public with his diagnosis in the hope that it would encourage others to get tested.

“I'm not ashamed to admit that I have dementia,” he said. “It's part of my life now. If I can help others by talking about it, then I will.”

The former United boss urged anyone who is concerned about their memory to get tested as early as possible.

“The sooner you get tested, the sooner you can get help,” he said. “And the sooner you get help, the better your chances of living a full and happy life.”

Ferguson's diagnosis has been met with an outpouring of support from the football world and beyond.

Manchester United said in a statement that they were “deeply saddened” by the news, but that they were “proud of the way in which he has handled this challenge.”

The Alzheimer's Society said that Ferguson's decision to go public was “a courageous act” that would help to raise awareness of dementia.

“Sir Alex Ferguson is a true football icon,” said the society's chief executive, Kate Lee. “His decision to speak out about his dementia diagnosis will help to break down the stigma surrounding this condition and encourage others to seek help.”
